Tenchi Muyo!

Tenchi Muyo! was created by Masaki Kajishima.  It follows the adventures of a Japanese teenager named Tenchi Masaki, who leads a normal life until some very beautiful and unusual girls become a part of it.  Beginning as an OVA (Original Video Animation, created specifically for home video), it grew as its popularity did.  A second OVA came, and much later a third.  There were 2 TV series, Tenchi Universe and Shin Tenchi Muyo (Tenchi in Tokyo).  The worlds of the OVA and 2 TV series are similar, with the same main characters, but are three separate timelines, differing in such ways as how the characters came to be together.  Shin Tenchi Muyo is much different from the other 2, in story as well as visual style.  There are 3 movies, Tenchi Muyo! in Love, Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness (or Manatsu no Eve), and Tenchi Forever (or Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2: Harukanaruomoi).  The first and third movies continue Tenchi Universe.  The second movie is in it's own continuity, yet takes place after the first OVA.  Kiyone is the one main character that appears in all the above except the OVA, in which Mihoshi's partner is the robot confined to her space ship.

"Tenchi Muyo" seems to have multiple meanings.  The whole thing can mean "this end up", which would make sense if you consider that Tenchi Masaki's life is turned upside down after he makes contact with the girls from outer space.  "Muyo" apparently means "no need", so "No Need for Tenchi" is another meaning, as well as "No Need for Heaven".  "Tenchi" could very well be a reference to heaven.  While looking over a book on Japanese, I saw "ten" referring to heaven and sky, among other things, and I saw "chi" referring to earth and ground, so the full translation might be "No Need for Heaven on Earth".  Either way, it's very clear that Ayeka and Ryoko find Tenchi to be more than worth fighting for.
