Yesterday, photo’s of a new prototype phone leaked, a PlayStation Phone to be exact, distributed by Sony Ericsson.  The phone is said to be equipped with Android 3.0 (a.k.a. Gingerbread) with a Sony Market that will allow users to purchase and download games at the click of a button.  It will have a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB RAM, 1GB ROM and a screen around 3.7 to 4.1 inches.  Also, instead of using the normal memory stick, it will support microSD cards.

You can see the gallery here.

Real or fake?

NowGamer said they phoned Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and asked them about the photos.  Supposedly, Sony told NowGamer that the images are “fake” but then later asked them to retract that quote and say, “We do not comment on rumour and speculation.”  Sony Ericsson also commented the same.

Engadget on the other hand, says that the device is real and not because they say so, but because they have “reliable, trusted sources.”

Whether this is real or fake, only time will tell, but if it is real, then I wouldn’t mind getting my greedy little hands on one.

I would hope it's a touch screen, otherwise that would be pretty awkward to use.

I saw a similar story the other day, but the picture had something different on the screen.

I'd hope so too, the internet would be easier to use on the original PSP with a touch screen.  If they do release a Playstation Phone (PSP?)  they'd dominate mobile gaming.

The iPhone's got an edge on the phone / game device market.

Wasn't really a secret, but it's officially confirmed.

Sony unveils PlayStation phone

Long-rumoured and oft-leaked Android handset finally officially confirmed; full details coming 13 February at Mobile World Congress.

Sony's plans to launch a PlayStation phone have been well-outlined through leaks in various forms over the past few months, with details of the operating system, the phone's looks and its technical specifications all emerging.

Sony-Ericsson today finally put the rumours to bed with a reveal of the Xperia Play handset. The device does, as predicted, have a very similar form factor to the PSP-go--which was itself prematurely revealed  before its official unveiling at E3 2009--and will run the Android operating system. A full reveal has been promised for later on this week during a 13 February event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Xperia Go will bear the PlayStation-certified logo as well as the familiar PlayStation face buttons, a d-pad, and shoulder buttons. It will feature access to the PlayStation Suite online services that were revealed at last month's NGP unveiling in Japan, allowing it to run PSone games alongside all the normal range of Android apps, games and widgets.

Sony-Ericsson marked the announcement with an advert during last night's Super Bowl though, like the phone, the advert had already leaked last week. The spot, which featured during the first half of the Packers' hard-fought victory, shows thumbs being surgically grafted to the familiar Android robot, seemingly in the back streets of an Asian city. You can watch the ad below.
