The 3G feature is nice - a direct connection to the net available almost everywhere. No more leeching! XD
2  Anime and Entertainment / Gaming / Re: Rift on: May 18, 2011, 06:42:29 am
I tried the beta for Rift and had a lot of mixed feelings about it. The gameplay was pretty much the same as most of the other mmo's out there and the same with the class archetypes. The selection of skill tree paths is a little different, but choosing three out of eight possibilities is a bit sketchy as to how well they would work together. It seems like it would require a considerable time investment in trial and error and rerolling to get a class setup that would work well. It's a little bit too much theorycrafting for me. ^_^;; The rift events were fun and the public party mechanic is very nice in that no individual or guild can camp or monopolize a rift. The character that I made was something like a paladin but it seemed very squishy for a plate wearer. Even pulling just two mobs at matched level, I would get owned very easily but it's hard to say if the game is just difficult or I had no clue what I was doing. (More likely the latter.) The end result was that a game that isn't solo friendly won't last very long with me.
3  Anime and Entertainment / Gaming / Re: New Warcraft Expansion on: May 17, 2011, 09:52:31 am
hopefully I won't wind up bored shitless before next summer.

Well, so much for that. ^_^;;

I got about five months out of this expansion before unsubbing last weekend. There were a few reasons for setting it aside, probably the most notable was that I completed the new content on three characters and therefore I wasn't really looking forward to doing any more of that. I tried out the goblin race and made a shaman which was fun for a little while but didn't really hold my interest. The Worgen never got past the character creation screen before mee vomiting on the ugliness. >_< So like the Tauren and Forsaken, I just couldn't get past the asthetic issue, sorries Blizz. I got to see a few of the dungeons and a couple of heroics, but certainly not everything that was available. The guild I was in seemed to be obsessed with guild achievements rather than Cataclysm dungeon content unless it happened to be the daily random. So I grew weary of that guild after I realized they were never going to change their focus. The higher level crafting professions were also a big disappointment. A seven day cooldown on the material recipe means months of waiting to max out tailoring, and after all of that ... you can only learn recipes for pvp gear. >_> So, faced with the prospect of doing daily quests for the next year and a half, I decided to pack it in until the next xpac ... which will be Q4 2012 I'm guessing?

It's a bit surprising that it lasted this long, but I know that even old games will keep a small number of loyalist that stay until the end. NCsoft has always struggled to break into the North American market. Aion had a promising launch, but it failed to keep a lot of players for the long run. NCsoft has done quite well in Korea, so they know their home market very well, but adapting to the individualistic entitlement ideology that dominates American mmo's hasn't yet worked out for them.

I don't know much about the university, but it looks like a high class place. I hope you get in! ^_^

This is one that I just started so I can't really say that much about it.

The characters are cute, but the setting and story are very dark. The impressions I get remind me of a modernistic Utena or X/1999 or a combination of both.

SMF has some captcha mods available on their site although I've never tried to use any of these myself -;basic_search=captcha

This kind of corporate crap goes on constantly and everywhere, much like a video gamer would find a glitch and exploit it before the devs get a fix on it. The only ones we hear about are the ones like this where a company actually get caught doing it. Lawsuits across international boundaries are a longshot at best and that amount could easily be swallowed by legal fees so the viability of going forward with a lawsuit isn't all that good, but it might make a good scare tactic to get 4kids to settle and pay up voluntarily

Many years ago, there used to be a comic strip in newspapers that charted the events and travels (Rebels' journey from Yavin to Hoth) of the main characters between episodes IV and V, which at the time were films #1 (Star Wars) and #2 (The Empire Strikes Back). I remember there were a few interesting things going on there that could have been made into a film too, however there really wasn't an epic climax and conclusion to that story. Originally film #1 was titled "Episode III" and film #2 was titled "Episode V" so there was definitely something planned for that gap in the storyline. Most likely a cinematic production was abandoned long ago, but it may be covered in some of the novels. I've only read a couple of those, so there is a lot more I could look into. The live action TV show you're referring to is something I haven't seen but if it is available on cable premium only, I may have to wait until it is released on DVD before I see any of that.

Admin approval doesn't work very well because a legitimate user would get swamped in a sea of bot applications. There is more sophisticated recaptcha software available than what the BBS devs supply with the forum originally.

It's funny though that Recaptcha is now owned by Google, probably the biggest spam factory on Earth ... ^_^;;

The franchise direction hasn't changed much since the second film, The Empire Strikes Back, was made. Only the original film wasn't made on the expection that it would become a blockbuster and so its strengths come from the acting performance and direction rather than a large budget. The newer prequel films are no doubt technically superior than the first trilogy, but substance-wise they are much the same as second two films of the first trilogy - some good story, but overwhelmed by special effects goodies most of the time. The Revenge of the Sith did bring back some of the epic storyline and interfaced it nicely to where the story picks up again in A New Hope so it gets my vote as the best of the prequels. The current works The Clone Wars movie and animated TV show are simply a spin-off from the main storyline so it is hard to compare the two. I'm a bit surprised that a Star Wars TV show wasn't done many years ago, but I guess that using the same actors as the movies would be cost prohibitive and lower cost substitutes would not go over well with the fan base. Animation is a good way to get around both of those issues - voice actors only need to sound like the originals. If you've read any of the Star Wars novels then you'll know that there is a great deal of material in the main storyline that has not been used in any of the movies so far. One book I've read recently, Millenium Falcon charts the history of this ship over a period of about 150 years, with the events of the six movies occupying only a portion of the middle of that. So it nicely expanded on what has already been presented and would also make a good film in itself I think. There is still a lot out there, so Star Wars is far from dead. How to keep it evolving correctly will always be the big challenge.
12  Anime and Entertainment / Tenchi Muyo! / Re: Tenchi Characters and Crisis on: March 24, 2011, 08:54:53 am
Having Tokimi get involved would make things a little too interesting as she normally deals with problems on a cosmic scale as opposed to something more localized like this. The odds that she might overdo it would be pretty high I would think. However, there is something I can see Tokimi being very useful for. The way that the Japanese government has handled things so far has been pretty uneven - some things have gone very well like the humanitarian aid, but the infrastructure problems (not just the nuclear plant) have been handled rather sloppily. Tokimi-sama would be able to reorganize things a bit to get better results from the government itself, indeed this would be like a kiddie toy compared to what she normally runs. ^_^;;

If egotism in politics is cause for divine punishment then all of us are hopelessly doomed ... ^_^;;

Trying to stabilize the seismic activity under Japan would be a little bit more of a challenge for Washu. Many things could be done but, short of solidifying the Earth's core, huge amounts of power would be needed to manipulate the movement of tectonic plates. Washu is certainly capable of providing such power, but I'm not sure that putting something like that in the hand of us Earth dwellers would be such a great idea.

If you have friends from other places, see if they are interested in coming here, otherwise it might be best to leave things as they are. The three of us seem to have some common interests and inviting random strangers is doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
